This paper is relevant especially due to the sector’s recent legal changes that resulted in the Law n. 14.026/2020, which intends to increase access to sanitation services in Brazil by opening its market to private sector operators. In order to estimate the impact, it was employed the differences-in-differences method, using data of 3.536 Brazilian municipalities, extracted from SNIS, the Brazilian National Sanitation Information System, for the years 1998-2019. The results show a positive and statistically significant impact of private sector operators (compared to their public peers) on water and sewage services – including sewer treatment. Also, it was also detected a positive and statistically significant impact on the tariffs charged for those services once privatization occurs, compared to the prices charged by public sector operators.
